The Little Montessori School

by Dinny Rebild (founding director)

The Little Montessori School opened in September 1990.

The school was opened by the Danish Montessori Society, in response to the need for Montessori education for children of parents from other parts of the world who were working in Denmark for a short period of time, and who also wanted an English-speaking environment for their children. We started with five children, all from differerent continents and countries, in a classroom in my own chilren's school, Sankt Knud Larvards, a private Catholic school in Lyngby Taarbæck. We will always be grateful to that school for believing in the project.

Very soon, there were many more children; the rooom became too small., and the school needed thrir classroom back. So with help from the municipality of Lyngby Taarbæck we moved to Lundtoftevej 97 in the summer of 1991.

It was a very special day when the children, my assistant and I walked from Sankt Knud Larvard School to our new address, received a new silver key, and opened the door of our new school. We sat on the floor in one of the rooms and ate our lunch, getting to know our new environment. We walked around the house and the garden, hardly believing our luck. When we left, one boy said ”Now, instead of calling our school the Little Montessori School, we should call it the BIG Montessori School”.

It has been a great privilege for me to see, over nearly twenty years, how easily and joyfully the children adapt to the the Montessori environment in the difficult time of adjustment to a new home and a new country, whether or not they come from another Montessori school. It has shown how well the system works in any time or place, with children of any race or religion..
